Health Care in a Small Town

By Michele Moquist

October 30, 2024

It’s 5:30 pm on a Thursday evening and your toddler is fussy, complete with tugging of an ear and a low-grade temperature. Your mommy gut says it’s an ear infection. You call your local small-town emergency room to see if they’re busy and the nurse tells you there are no patients. You load up your fussy toddler and in a five-minute drive, you are walking into the emergency room, welcomed by two friendly and empathetic nurses. The on-call doctor is there shortly after. In less than one hour, you and your ear infection-ridden toddler are headed home with antibiotics to kick the infection.

This story has been true for me several times. My kids tend to only need to see the doctor after 5:00 pm and it’s typically for ear infections. Living in a small town has been an immense gift for my sanity and time in the realm of health care.

Quality, efficiency, and kindness describe my experience with small town healthcare in northeast North Dakota. As a young mom of an army of kids, we are frequent fliers to our local clinic, hospital, and ER from well-baby checks, routine vaccinations, physical, speech and occupational therapy, ear infections, accidents, and more.

  • Quality medical staff, as well as reception staff, make visits comfortable and valuable.
  • Efficiency is shown in the briefness of an appointment. From waiting room to leaving the building, small town health care is more conscientious of your time.
  • Permeating all aspects is the immense kindness shown to you as a patient or health care advocate. The reception staff could be your neighbor or fellow church member. The medical staff are members of your community that you see in other aspects of life which gives them and you a deeper understanding and compassion for each other.

Some people may be concerned with living in the same small town as their healthcare professionals, but in my experience, coexisting in community with these professionals only improves the quality of care and compassion you receive in your time of need.

Don’t take my word only for the excellent health care provided in Northeast North Dakota. Located in Cavalier, the Pembina County Memorial Hospital Association (PCMHA) has earned a 2024 Top 20 Best Practices in Quality designation from the National Rural Health Association. This honor indicates PCMHA was ranked in the Top 20 for quality of the 1,368 critical access hospitals in the United States. The ranking is determined by the Chartis Center for Rural Health, based on data compiled in the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX™, specifically the quality domain. The National Rural Health Association considers Pembina County Memorial Hospital Association to be shining example of best practices in all of rural health care. PCMHA has also been designated as a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital by the Chartis Center for eight years, and has received the Top 20 Best Practices in Quality award in 2019, 2020, 2021, and now 2024.

Excellence in quality care with a small town feel is an incredible asset to living in Northeast North Dakota.

Living in a small town amplifies connections with those in your community, maximizing the quality, efficiency, and kindness you can receive at your local health care center.

Celebrating achievements is also an endearing aspect to small town life! To celebrate this incredible honor in quality health care, Pembina County Memorial Hospital Association is hosting a Teddy Bear Clinic and popcorn bar on Sunday, November 3 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm.  Kids are encouraged to bring their stuffed animals in for a check up and minor repairs.  The free Teddy Bear Clinic will be an interactive event open to all ages.
