When you think of winter in northeast North Dakota, long, cold months might come to mind. But here’s the secret: winter isn’t just something to survive—it’s something to embrace. Despite the frigid weather, this region is a fantastic place to live, offering beauty, adventure, and a strong sense of community. At the heart of this winter wonderland lies Cavalier City Park, where cross-country skiing transforms chilly days into memorable experiences.

Embrace the Nordic Spirit: Friluftsliv

Inspired by Scandinavian roots, many in North Dakota live by the philosophy of friluftsliv (pronounced “free-loofs-leaf”), meaning “fresh-air life.” This Nordic mindset encourages us to connect with nature, stay active, and find joy outdoors—even in the depths of winter. Cavalier City Park is the perfect place to put friluftsliv into action, with serene wooded trails that welcome beginners and seasoned adventurers alike.

Skiing at Cavalier City Park: A Local Treasure

For Doug Fisher, a dedicated cross-country skier and local enthusiast, Cavalier City Park is a true gem. “The park is less than five minutes from my home,” Doug shares. “It’s so convenient, and I can enjoy skiing without traveling far.” Over the years, the park has undergone significant improvements—widened trails, cleared branches, and added routes—making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone. “The trails offer peace, tranquility, and beauty,” Doug says. “It’s not just about exercise; it’s about recharging your mind and body.” The wooded paths protect skiers from harsh winds, and even on the coldest days, the trails provide a peaceful refuge. Wildlife tracks in the snow add a touch of magic, sparking imaginations about the animals living in the woods.

A Community Legacy

The trails exist thanks to the generosity of Eliza McKechnie, who donated the land to the park in 1980. Today, the park is a beloved feature of Cavalier, maintained by the City Park Board and the North Dakota Forest Service. Their ongoing efforts to diversify tree populations and protect the forest ensure this natural treasure remains vibrant for generations to come.

Getting Started: A Beginner-Friendly Adventure

New to cross-country skiing? Cavalier City Park is an excellent place to start. With flat terrain and no hills, the trails are beginner-friendly and welcoming. Doug Fisher’s passion for the sport extends to helping others give it a try. “I have about forty pairs of ski boots and fifteen pairs of skis and poles to lend,” Doug says. “If you want to try cross-country skiing, just call or text me at 701-520-4480. I’d love to help people experience this amazing activity.”
Doug believes skiing can transform how you feel about winter. “Without cross-country skiing, I wouldn’t even like winter,” he admits. “But now, I can’t wait for the snow. Skiing feels effortless and fun—much better than running or walking. I can’t imagine spending winter on a treadmill when there’s snow outside.”

Discover the Joy of Northeast North Dakota

Beyond Cavalier City Park, Doug dreams of expanding cross-country skiing to other scenic areas like the Sand Hills near Svold, the Pembina Gorge, and the Pembina Escarpment. “We live in such a cold place, but it’s enjoyable because of skiing,” he says. “There’s so much potential here for incredible winter experiences.”
Cavalier City Park is a shining example of how northeast North Dakota turns winter into a season of joy and opportunity. Whether you’re gliding through snow-covered trails or simply soaking in the stillness of the woods, this winter, take a cue from Scandinavia: bundle up, head outdoors, and discover the magic of friluftsliv. Winter in North Dakota isn’t just bearable – it’s beautiful.
