5 Unique Ways to Enjoy Northeast North Dakota

By Adrienne Montonye

Folks from the big city are trading in their hefty mortgages and scant space for the landscapes of rural life. North Dakota’s population of about 700,000 is equipped to accommodate them. The slow pace and lack of ready entertainment may surprise city-dwellers.  Below are some tips for making the most of life in Northeast North Dakota, whether you’re a new arrival or a lifelong resident:

Scour Local Bulletin Boards for Uncommon Events

The bulletin boards of tiny towns are ripe with novel events (such as the near 40 year-running Bologna Feed of Minto, ND).  Find them pinned to the bulletin boards in gathering spots around town.

Walk the Entire Town with a Local

There’s no end to a local’s knowledge about the people and places in her town. Take a walk with a native and enjoy the stories of who lives in what house, find out the controversies happening in the town, and learn what happened at last night’s festivities!

Attend a Local Sports Event

People show up to support their local school teams in rural North Dakota towns. Among the ambience of small-town talk, the sizzling of burgers, and local kids shouting, is the chance to meet fellow residents of neighboring tiny towns.

Dawdle Around the Local Park

One will usually find a remnant of the play equipment of yesteryear in a tiny town park. Bring the kids and give them a taste of the past!

Discover the Countryside of Tiny Towns

Living rural keeps the cozy countryside within reach at a moment’s notice. Take an impromptu drive or walk and discover what lies just outside town. Northeast North Dakota landscapes are filled with rich farmland (we tout the richest soil in the world).
