5 Kid-Friendly Summer Adventures in Northeast North Dakota

Long summer days are for exploring in Northeast North Dakota! While time off from school typically means more play time outside or riding your bike to the park or camping with the family. Here are five out-of-the-box adventures to enjoy with your kids this summer! 

Dig into the Fun at the Pembina Gorge Fossil Dig

Are your kids fascinated with pre-historic creatures? Kids aged 10+ can literally dig in to a half day fossil dig in the beautiful Pembina Gorge where mosasaurs, giant squid, sea turtles, aquatic birds, large (and small) fish, snails, clams, and more once swam 80 million years ago. (Fun fact: a new species and genus of mosasaur, the Jarmungandr Walhallaensis, was discovered there!There is also a full day dig for  ages 15+! Be sure to pack a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a camera and lunch (if you’re in for a full day)!

Barefaced Studio – Art Classes 

The best way to spend a rainy or sweltering hot day is to get creative at Barefaced Studio in Grafton. Let the kids’ imaginations stretch to create fun paintings or crafts! Barefaced also offers birthday parties, group classes, art camp and other activities to kids of all ages! 
 

Keep the Kids Entertained at Kids Weekend  

Start your kids’ love of the outdoors and camping at Icelandic State Park during Kids Weekend! Typically held the second weekend in August, the themed Kids Weekend is devoted to kids with crafts, games, contests, prizes and entertainment! Icelandic State Park offers boating, swimming, fishing, a three-mile trail system in the Gunlogson Nature Preserve, historic sites and the Pioneer Heritage Center  

Ride the Mountain at Frost Fire 

Thrill-seeking kids of all ages are drawn to Frost Fire Park, featuring the only downhill mountain bike trails with lift service in North Dakota. With 350 feet of elevation, these high-quality bike trails appeal to all levels of riders. There are eight trails, including three beginner-friendly trails for inexperienced riders. Full or half-day suspension bike rentals are available on site on a first-some-first serve basis. Half, Full Day or Season passes are available for access passes. Don’t forget your helmets, they are required  

Relax and Chill at Stump Lake Park 

For busy families seeking a refreshing break, Stump Lake Park offers the perfect old-fashioned camping getaway. Take a kid fishing in the lake or burn off energy on the sports courts and swimming area, or relax the day away floating on the water! Whether you like to pitch a tent or haul your camper and boat, Stump Lake is the perfect place for a rejuvenating outdoor adventure to escape the hustle and bustle!
